Recently, YAC elected a new slate of officers for 2016/2017:
YAC gave two grants to the Women's Center/Harbor House within the past year. Two people from the organization came to speak to us about how the funds have been used. We heard from the Program Director and the Chief Financial Officer and learned that the funds:
1. helped the intake coordinators and counselors make their offices more child-friendly (which helps children feel more safe and happy) and
2. helped renovate a special area lounge mostly for moms to relax.
Most of us didn't know how large the domestic abuse problem is in our county and all of us were glad to support this important resource.
Bob Chapman spoke to our YAC at our meeting yesterday, December 6, about the project, their progress, and how YAC can help spread the love. We learned about how City government works with a large scale community-based project, how an inclusive/adaptive playground is different from a regular playground, and how long it can take to make a large project happen. The discussion affirmed our feelings of pride to be part of this.
Ding, dong! The school bell will ring TOMORROW and that means YAC will begin again for the year soon. Several of our wonderful seniors graduated and we are actively looking for new YACers to join up. To learn more, check out our website, talk to YACers you know, and/or contact parent advisor, Carrie Pearson! The contact info is shown at the bottom of the page. Hope to hear from you soon!
(Yes, this is what phones used to look like. Imagine carrying that in your back pocket!)
This is what we look like after a grant review meeting.
We had twelve great programs in front of us for review and 11 YACers debating, questioning, compromising, and ultimately deciding. It was a tiring, but worthwhile meeting.
Marquette YAC has selected the proposed new accessible playground at Presque Isle as its fundraising emphasis for the next two years. Special guests, Joan Miller and Peter Fraiser, presented to YAC on 5/18/14 about the playground elements, fundraising goals, and timing.
Due to graduation and all the partays, the next YAC meeting will be Sunday, June 15 at 6:00 PM at Lakeview. There will only be one meeting in June and members will decide on the 15th how they want to meet over the summer. In open nomination and closed voting, a new slate of officers was elected tonight. Please congratulate your new Treasurer, Chloe Wilkinson, Secretary, Carter Shand, Vice President, Vidhya Nadarajan, and President, Elle Pearson.
We welcomed Mr. Bradley at our recent YAC meeting. He shared information about Career Technical Education and how it benefits high schoolers in Marquette and Alger Counties. We learned about the goals of the group and offered ideas for spreading the word. Thanks for the visit!
Spring grant applications are ready! The process is all online. No paper copies of grants will be accepted. Savin' trees, baby! Go here to apply: https://marq.iphiview.com/marq/ForNonprofits/BecomeaRegisteredGranteeOrganization/tabid/650/Default.aspx
